“Robert Cander” ~ a report by Tara (5th)

Robert Cander (6) Robert Cander (5)

Robert Cander is my Great Great Grandfather. He was born in 1874 in Clare, Kildress, Cookstown Co.Tyrone.

He and his family moved to Scotland when he was 14. At the age of 19 he worked in coalmines but quit because of
a health issues in realation to his breathing problems.

He married Catherine McGrath in 1900.

They had seven children but sadly their first and only boy died shortly after birth.

All the rest were girls and their names were Ellen (1903), Kate (1905), Annie (7-7-1907), Mary (1910), Jean (1913), Ruby (1915).

Before the war had started he was member of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. His regiment fought at Gallipoli in 1915, Turkey.

He died on the 1-7-1916 in the Battle of the Somme.

More then 60,000 people were killed or injured on that day.

He is buried in Auchonvillers Military Cemetary, France. My family and I are very proud of what he did.
