Crop Fails Again ~ a report by Caitlin (6th)

In 1846 the potato crops failed again, despite the hopes for successful crops. People were very hungry and they didn’t have anything to eat. They had no food and worried about there children as it would be hard to feed them. The starving people ate whatever they could find and some even had to eat grass to survive.

An Gorta Mór ~ an introduction by Jane (6th)

The Irish Famine also known as an Gorta Mór, in Irish, occurred in Ireland in 1845 – 1851 when the potato crop failed. The crops failures were caused by blight, a disease that destroys leaves and edible roots or tubers of the potato plant. At the time over eight million people lived in Ireland.
