Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir of the throne of Austria-Hungry and was assassinated in Serbia and that’s what started World War I, Austria-Hungry declared war on Serbia after what had happened to Archduke, Russia came to help Serbia in the War
At the start of the twentieth century the kings of six countries (Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Germany and Austria-Hungry signed an alliance so if war ever happened they would come to each others aid.

The battle of Somme began on the morning of July 1st 1916, when British soldiers came out of their trenches and attacked Germany, the battle lasted five months.
20,000 British soldiers died and 40,000 were wounded, around 100,000 British soldiers died and 400,000 were injured.

The effects of the War was terrible and most soldiers died, some of the soldiers went blind from gas and other soldiers lost arms and legs.
When soldiers got home after the war, they had nightmares when they went to bed from what they had seen at war.
