1940s- At the end of WWII, tractor technology was emerging more safer and it was the more efficient way to farm. Largely with thanks to Harry Ferguson, who previously working  with Ford honed his skills to bring about the Massey Ferguson. It was about 20Hp.

Steam Power ~ an explanation by Caitlin (6th)

From the 1700’s, steam was quickly evolving as a major player in power and transportation. Steam powered engines were pumping water from mines, traveling across railways and waterways. In agriculture it’s presence was felt with the arrival of the steam thresher. Threshing is the process of removing the grain from the stalk.

In the olden times before mechanized machines, farmers horses were used to power the various tools. This is why today we still talk about the speed of a tractor as its horse power. Horses pulled trailers, ploughs and the earliest combine harvesters were horse drawn.

Number facts about Farming ~ a report by Caitlin (6th)

Image result for farmIn 2016, there were 137,500 farms in Ireland. More than half 52.7% of all farms were located in the Border, Midland and Western region. The average farm was 32.4 hectares, farms in the Southern and Eastern region were 41.3% larger than those in the BMW region. Did you know an average farm size of 38.3 hectares compared to 27.1 hectares.

hay balesIf you have a farm and you are on the hay stacks you mustn’t climb on them because they aren’t playgrounds. Cause if you are on them it could be very loose and you could fall. Climbing on a hay stack because it is very dangerous and if you are climbing on it you must have a parent that is keeping an eye on you.
